arginine (l-arginine)	study results are mixed as to whether arginine as a therapy by itself directly helps certain kidney diseases or failure. arginine may be a helpful adjunct for kidney disease related conditions such as anemia in the elderly. additional research is needed in this area.	c
ginseng (american ginseng, asian ginseng, chinese ginseng, korean red ginseng, panax ginseng: panax spp. including p. ginseng c.c. meyer and p. quinquefolius l., excluding eleutherococcus senticosus)	early evidence suggests that a form of ginseng not commonly available in the united states may improve kidney damage in patients with diabetes. some research suggests that panax notoginseng may be as effective as the prescription drug ticlid . however, more research is needed.	c
iodine (i)	iodine has been suggested as a possible treatment for kidney cysts, or small, fluid-filled sacs in the kidneys. early research suggests that povidone iodine injections after kidney cysts are drained are not effective.	d
zinc	early studies show potential improvement in uremic patients taking zinc supplements. further research is needed to confirm these results. zinc supplementation may be recommended only in the patients with proven zinc deficiency, but for all chronic renal failure patients it is questionable.	c
