belladonna (atropa belladonna l. or its variety acuminata royle ex lindl)	belladonna has been used historically for the treatment of irritable bowel, and in theory its mechanism of action should be effective for some of the symptoms. however, of the few studies that are available, none clearly show that belladonna alone (not as part of a mixed product) provides this effect.	c
lactobacillus acidophilus	human studies report mixed results in the improvement of bowel symptoms after taking lactobacillus acidophilus by mouth.	c
melatonin	melatonin has shown some beneficial effects in patients with ibs. further study using a larger number of patients is needed before a recommendation can be made.	c
peppermint (mentha x piperita l.)	peppermint may improve irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) symptoms. additional study is necessary before a strong recommendation can be made.	b
psyllium (plantago ovata, plantago isphagula)	psyllium preparations have been studied for more than 20 years in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. results of these trials have been conflicting. in some cases, insoluble fiber may worsen the clinical outcome.	c
turmeric (curcuma longa linn.) and curcumin	irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) is a common functional disorder for which there are limited reliable medical treatments. one study investigated the effects of curcuma xanthorriza on ibs and found that treatment did not show any therapeutic benefit over placebo. more studies are needed to verify these findings.	c
